ANSI Z359 is the primary fall protection standard in the United States, covering arrest forces, deceleration distances, and equipment testing requirements. OSHA references ANSI Z359 standards in 29 CFR 1926 (construction) and 29 CFR 1910 (general industry). Equipment used on OSHA-regulated worksites must be ANSI Z359-compliant.
EN 1891 is the European standard for low-stretch kernmantle ropes, widely used as the reference standard for rope access programs outside of jurisdictions with specific local requirements. IRATA and SPRAT — the main certification bodies for professional rope access technicians — require EN 1891-certified ropes for their programs. All ARMBURY Professional static ropes carry EN 1891 certification.
For rope access work, 10–11 mm is the standard range — compatible with the major mechanical descenders and ascenders, and providing a practical balance of strength, weight, and hardware compatibility. ARMBURY Professional static ropes range from 9 mm (lightweight canyoneering/rescue) to 12 mm (heavy-duty industrial rigging).
Full-body harnesses are required for fall arrest in most industrial applications — sit harnesses are not compliant for arrest systems. ARMBURY Professional harnesses feature dorsal D-ring attachment points for arrest systems and sternal/side attachment points for rope access work positioning. Look for harnesses with padding at the thigh and shoulder loops if workers will be suspended for extended periods.
For fall arrest, lanyards must be used with an energy absorber that limits arrest forces to ≤6 kN (ANSI Z359 limit). Twin-leg lanyards allow continuous clip-in while moving across elevated surfaces. Self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) are preferred where workers move around a fixed anchor — they limit fall distance more effectively than standard lanyards.
